The Difference Between Virtue and Vice

SUMMARY: Virtue is having a kind disposition and vice is something that you would not want others to know about.

Nawwas b. Sam'an al-Ansari reported: I asked Allah's Messenger about virtue and vice. He said: Virtue is a kind disposition and vice is what rankles in your heart and that you disapprove that people should come to know of it.
حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمِ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ النَّوَّاسِ بْنِ سَمْعَانَ الأَنْصَارِيِّ، قَالَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَنِ الْبِرِّ وَالإِثْمِ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ وَالإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي صَدْرِكَ وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ

This hadith explains the difference between virtue and vice. Virtue is having a kind disposition towards others while vice is something that one would not want others to know about. It could be an action or thought that one has done or had which they are ashamed of or do not want to be known by other people. This hadith teaches us to always strive for virtue in our lives as it will bring us closer to Allah and make us better people overall. We should also try our best to stay away from vices as they can lead us astray from the path of righteousness and cause harm both spiritually and physically.
