Sahih Muslim 2489b (Book 44, Hadith 224) #13475
Permission Denied for Satirizing Polytheists

SUMMARY: Allah's Apostle did not allow Hassan b. Thabit to satirize against the polytheists, but instead of using a certain word, another was used.

'Urwa reported on the same chain of transmitters that Hassan b. Thabit sought permission from Allah's Apostle to satirize against the polytheists, but he did not mention Abu Sufyan. And instead of the word al- Khamir, the word al-'Ajin was used.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be respectful and mindful when speaking or expressing ourselves; strive for understanding rather than judgement/criticism whenever possible

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's refusal to grant permission to Hassan b. Thabit to satirize against the polytheists. The Prophet instead suggested that he use a different word than what he originally intended in order to avoid offending anyone unnecessarily. This hadith teaches us that we should be respectful and mindful of others when speaking or expressing ourselves, even if it is in jest or satire, as it can still cause harm and hurt feelings if done without consideration for others' feelings and beliefs. We should also be mindful of our words when speaking about those who may not share our beliefs or opinions; we should strive for understanding rather than judgement or criticism whenever possible.
