The Prophet's Last Words to His Daughter

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) informed his daughter Fatima of his impending death and her being the first of his family to follow him, which made her weep and then laugh.

'A'isha reported that Allah's Messenger called his daughter Fatima (during his last illness). He said. to her something secretly and she wept. He again said to her something secretly and she laughed'.A'isha further reported that she said to Fatima: What is that which Allah's Messenger said to you secretly and you wept and then said to you something secretly and you laughed? Thereupon she said: He informed me secretly of his death and so I wept. He then again informed me secretly that I would be the first amongst the members of his family to follow him and so I laughed.
حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورُ بْنُ أَبِي مُزَاحِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ - عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، ح وَحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ - حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ عُرْوَةَ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ، حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ حَدَّثَتْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ دَعَا فَاطِمَةَ ابْنَتَهُ فَسَارَّهَا فَبَكَتْ ثُمَّ سَارَّهَا فَضَحِكَتْ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَقُلْتُ لِفَاطِمَةَ مَا هَذَا الَّذِي سَارَّكِ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَبَكَيْتِ ثُمَّ سَارَّكِ فَضَحِكْتِ قَالَتْ سَارَّنِي فَأَخْبَرَنِي بِمَوْتِهِ فَبَكَيْتُ ثُمَّ سَارَّنِي فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَنِّي أَوَّلُ مَنْ يَتْبَعُهُ مِنْ أَهْلِهِ فَضَحِكْتُ

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad PBUH was speaking with his beloved daughter Fatima in his last days. He told her something in secret that made her weep, and then he told her something else that made her laugh. When asked what it was about, she revealed that he had informed her secretly of his death which caused her to weep. He then informed her secretly that she would be the first amongst the members of his family to follow him which caused laughter instead. This hadith teaches us about the importance of family bonds even in difficult times such as death or loss. It also shows us how much love and care our beloved Prophet PBUH had for those around him, especially for those closest to him like Fatima who was one of four daughters from two wives.
