Sahih al-Bukhari 1380 (Book 23, Hadith 132) #1324
The Awareness of the Deceased

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that when a deceased person is being carried to their burial, they will be aware of it and depending on their righteousness, they will either be content or regretful.

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: Allah's Messenger said, "When the funeral is ready (for its burial) and the people lift it on their shoulders, then if the deceased is a righteous person he says, 'Take me ahead,' and if he is not a righteous one then he says, 'Woe to it (me)! Where are you taking it (me)?' And his voice is audible to everything except human beings; and if they heard it they would fall down unconscious ".

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive towards righteousness in life so you can have peace even after your death.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the awareness of a deceased person when they are being taken for burial. It is narrated by Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that when a funeral is ready and people lift it on their shoulders, if the deceased was righteous then they would say “Take me ahead” in joy while if not then they would say “Woe to it! Where are you taking me?” in regret. This voice can be heard by all creatures except humans and if humans were to hear this voice, they would faint. This hadith teaches us about the importance of righteousness as even after death one's deeds follow them and determine how content or regretful one will feel at their own funeral procession. It also serves as an important reminder for us to strive towards righteousness so we can have peace even after our death.
