Sahih Muslim 2297a (Book 43, Hadith 39) #13064
The Prophet's Contention at the Cistern

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) being at the Cistern and contending for some people, but having to yield because of their innovations after his death.

'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger as saying; I shall be there at the Cistern before you, and I shall have to contend for some people, but I shall have to yield. I would be saying: My Lord, they are my friends, they are my friends, and it would be said: You don't know what innovations they made after you.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of a time when the Prophet Muhammad will be standing by a cistern, or large pool of water, and he will be contending for some people. He will plead with God that they are his friends, but it will be said to him that he does not know what innovations they made after his death. This hadith teaches us that even though we may have good intentions towards someone, if they do something wrong after our death then we cannot vouch for them in front of God. It also teaches us to stay away from innovation and stick to what has been taught by our beloved prophet Muhammad PBUH. We should strive to follow in his footsteps and live according to his teachings so that we can attain salvation on the Day of Judgment.
