Sahih al-Bukhari 1360 (Book 23, Hadith 113) #1305
Refusing to Accept Islam

SUMMARY: The hadith is about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) trying to convince Abu Talib to accept Islam before his death, but he refused and stayed on the religion of his forefathers.

Narrated Sa'id bin Al-Musaiyab from his father: When the time of the death of Abu Talib approached, Allah's Messenger went to him and found Abu Jahl bin Hisham and 'Abdullah bin Abi Umaiya bin Al-Mughira by his side. Allah's Messenger said to Abu Talib, "O uncle! Say: None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, a sentence with which I shall be a witness (ie argue) for you before Allah. Abu Jahl and 'Abdullah bin Abi Umaiya said, "O Abu Talib! Are you going to denounce the religion of 'Abdul Muttalib?" Allah's Messenger kept on inviting Abu Talib to say it (ie 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah') while they (Abu Jahl and 'Abdullah) kept on repeating their statement till Abu Talib said as his last statement that he was on the religion of 'Abdul Muttalib and refused to say, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah'. (Then Allah's Messenger said, "I will keep on asking Allah's forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden (by Allah) to do so". So Allah revealed (the verse) concerning him (ie It is not fitting for the Prophet and those who believe that they should invoke (Allah) for forgiveness for pagans even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of the fire (9:113).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates the story of Prophet Muhammad's attempt to invite Abu Talib, his uncle, to accept Islam before he passed away. Despite the Prophet's insistence and repeated invitations, Abu Talib refused and stayed on the religion of his forefathers. This hadith teaches us that we should never give up in inviting people towards Allah's path even if they refuse multiple times. It also teaches us that we should not be disheartened by someone else's refusal as it is ultimately up to them whether they choose faith or not. Furthermore, this hadith also shows us how much mercy and compassion Prophet Muhammad showed towards those who rejected him as he continued asking for forgiveness for them until Allah revealed a verse forbidding him from doing so.
