The Use of Incantation in Healing

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) approved the use of incantation to mitigate the effects of a snake bite and encouraged Asma' to use it for her family.

Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported that Allah's Apostle granted sanction to the family of Hazm for incantation (in mitigating the effect of the poison of) the snake, and, he said -to Asma' daughter of 'Umais: What is this that I see the children of my brother lean? Are they not fed properly? She said: No, but they fall under the influence of an evil eve. He said: Use incantation She recited (the words of incantation before him), whereupon he (by approving them) said: Yes, use this incantation for them.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek help from both physical and spiritual sources when trying to heal oneself or others; take care of one's physical health through proper nutrition and exercise; use ruqyah as a form healing method; seek guidance from Allah SWT through prayer and supplication .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's approval for using incantations, also known as ruqyah, to heal people from snake bites. In this hadith, Asma', daughter of Umais, asked the Prophet if her family was not being fed properly because they were looking lean. The Prophet then asked her if she used incantations on them and when she said no he told her to do so. This shows us that even though we should take care of our physical health by eating well and exercising, we should also take care of our spiritual health by using ruqyah as a form of healing. We can learn from this hadith that it is important to seek help from both physical and spiritual sources when trying to heal ourselves or others around us.
