Sahih Muslim 2033d (Book 36, Hadith 177) #12405
Eating with Cleanliness and Not Leaving Food for the Devil

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of eating with cleanliness and not leaving food for the devil.

Jabir reported: I heard Allah's Apostle as saying: The Satan is present with any one of you in everything he does; he is present even when he eats food; so if any one of you drops a mouthful he should remove away anything filthy on it and eat it and not leave for the devil; and when he finishes (food) he should lick his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of his food the blessing lies.

QUICK LESSONS:
Eat with mindfulness, remove anything filthy on dropped mouthfuls before consuming them again, lick your fingers after finishing your meal.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes on the importance of eating with cleanliness and not leaving food for the devil. It was narrated by Jabir that he heard Allah's Apostle saying that Satan is present when one eats food, so if any one drops a mouthful, they should remove away anything filthy on it and eat it instead of leaving it for Satan. After finishing their meal, they should lick their fingers as they do not know in which portion of their food lies the blessing. This hadith teaches us to be mindful while eating our meals as we don't want to leave any blessings behind or give an opportunity to Satan to take advantage of us. We must also ensure that our hands are clean before we start eating so that we can enjoy all its blessings without any hindrance from Satan.
