Prohibiting the Preparation of Nabidh in a Pitcher Besmeared with Pitch

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad forbade the preparation of Nabidh in a pitcher besmeared with pitch.

Jabalah reported: I heard Ibn 'Umar narrating that Allah's messenger had forbidden (the preparation of Nabidh) in the pitcher besmeared with pitch. I said to him: What is huntama? He said: It is a pitcher (besmeared with pitch).
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ جَبَلَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ، يُحَدِّثُ قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ عَنِ الْحَنْتَمَةِ ‏.‏ فَقُلْتُ مَا الْحَنْتَمَةُ قَالَ الْجَرَّةُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of preparing Nabidh in a pitcher besmeared with pitch. Nabidh is an Arabic drink made by soaking dates or raisins in water and leaving it to ferment for several days. Huntama is an Arabic word for pitcher which has been smeared with pitch or tar to make it waterproof and airtight. According to this hadith, Prophet Muhammad forbade people from preparing this drink in such pitchers as it was considered unhealthy and impure according to Islamic teachings at that time. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of our health and hygiene when consuming food or drinks as well as being aware of what we are consuming so that we can stay healthy and safe from any harm caused by unhealthy food or drinks.
