Sahih Muslim 1968b (Book 35, Hadith 30) #12198
Fairness and Equity in Resource Distribution

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) teaching his companions to be fair and equitable when dividing up resources.

Rafi' b. Khadij reported: While we were with Allah's Messenger (may peace he upon him) in Dhu'I-Hulaifa in Tihama, we got hold of goats and camels. Some persons (amongst us) made haste and boiled (the flesh of goats and camels) in their earthen pots. He then commanded and these were turned over; then he equalized ten goats for a camel. The rest of the hadith is the same.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for fairness and equality when sharing resources among ourselves .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's teachings on fairness and equity when it comes to distributing resources. In this particular instance, he was with his companions in Dhu'I-Hulaifa in Tihama, where they got hold of goats and camels. Some of them were eager to cook the meat, so they boiled it in their earthen pots. The Prophet then commanded that these pots be turned over, so that everyone would get an equal share of ten goats for a camel. This teaches us that we should always strive for fairness and equality when sharing resources among ourselves, no matter how eager we are to get our hands on them first!
