Refusing Unfamiliar Food

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger (PBUH) refused to eat a roasted lizard as it was not found in the land of his people and he had no liking for it.

'Abdullah b. 'Abbas reported: I and Khalid b. Walid went to the apartment of Maimuna along with Allah's Messenger , and there was presented to him a roasted lizard. Allah's Messenger stretched his hand towards It, whereupon some of the women who had been in the house of Maimuna said: Inform Allah's Messenger what he intends to eat. Allah's Messenger lifted his hand. I said: Messenger of Allah, Is it forbidden? He said: #It is not found in the land of my people, and I feel that I have no liking for it. Khalid said: I then chewed and ate it, while, Allah's Messenger was looking (at me).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the eating habits of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and how he refused to eat something that was unfamiliar to him. It is narrated by Abdullah b. 'Abbas that he and Khalid b. Walid went to the apartment of Maimuna along with Allah's Messenger ﷺ where a roasted lizard was presented to him but he refused it saying that it was not found in the land of his people and he had no liking for it. Even though Khalid chewed and ate it while Allah's Messenger ﷺ watched, this incident shows us how important our eating habits are according to Islam as we should only consume what is permissible according to Islamic law or what we are familiar with consuming in our culture or country so as not to harm ourselves or others around us through consuming something unknown or unfamiliar which may have negative effects on our health or wellbeing.
