Sahih Muslim 1898a (Book 33, Hadith 206) #12016
Differentiating Between Those Who Stay at Home and Those Who Go Out for Jihad

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the revelation of a Quranic verse that differentiates between those who stay at home and those who go out for Jihad in the way of Allah.

It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Ishaq, that he heard Bara' talking about the Qur'anic verse: " Those who sit (at home) from among the believers and those who go out for Jihad in the way of Allah are not equal" (iv. 95). (He said that) the Messenger of Allah ordered Zaid (to write the verse). He brought a shoulder-blade (of a slaughtered camel) and inscribed it (the verse) thereon. The son of Umm Maktum complained of his blindness to the Prophet . (At this) descended the revelation:" Those of the believers who sit (at home) without any trouble (illness, incapacity, disability)" (iv. 95). The tradition has been handed down through two other chains of transmitters.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about a Quranic verse that was revealed to differentiate between believers who stay at home and those who go out for jihad in the way of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ordered Zaid to write down this verse on a shoulder-blade of a slaughtered camel. Later on, when Umm Maktum's son complained about his blindness to the Prophet Muhammad, another revelation was sent down which changed the wording of this verse from "those who sit" to "those of the believers who sit". This hadith teaches us that even though going out for jihad is an important part of being a believer, staying at home without any trouble or disability is also equally important. It also shows us how merciful and compassionate our beloved Prophet Muhammad was towards people with disabilities or illnesses.
