Sahih Muslim 1778 (Book 32, Hadith 102) #11730
Encouragement in Adversity

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions attempted to conquer the people of Ta'if, but were unsuccessful. Despite this, the Prophet (PBUH) still encouraged them to make a raid in the morning and laughed at their waywardness.

It has been narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Amr who said: The Messenger of Allah besieged the people of Ta'if, but did get victory over them. He said: God willing, we shall return. His Companions said: Shall we depart without having conquered it? The Messenger of Allah said: (All right) make a raid in the morning. They did so. and were wounded (with the arrows showered upon them). So the Messenger of Allah said: We shall depart tomorrow. (The narrator says): (Now) this (announcement) pleased them, and the Messenger of Allah laughed at (their waywardness).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how even when faced with adversity, it is important to remain positive and have faith that things will get better. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was surrounded by enemies at Ta'if but he still encouraged his companions to make a raid in the morning despite knowing they would be wounded by arrows. He also laughed at their waywardness which shows that even though they were facing difficulty, it was important for them not to lose hope or become discouraged. This hadith teaches us that no matter what situation we are in, we should always remain hopeful and have faith that things will get better eventually if we keep trying our best.
