Sahih Muslim 1703a (Book 29, Hadith 48) #11556
Punishment of Slave Women Who Commit Adultery and Fornication

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the punishment for a slave woman who commits adultery and fornication.

Abu Huraira reported that he heard Allah's Messenger as saying: When the slave-woman of any of you commits adultery and this (offence of hers) becomes clear, she should be flogged (as the prescribed) punishment, but hurl no reproach at her. If she commits adultery again, she should (again be punished) by flogging, but hurl no reproach upon her. If she commits fornication for the third time and it becomes clear, then he should sell her, even if only for a rope of hair.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the punishment of a slave woman who commits adultery or fornication. According to this hadith, if a slave woman commits adultery or fornication she should be punished by flogging but no reproach should be hurled at her. If she repeats the offence again then she should again be punished by flogging but no reproach should be hurled at her. If she repeats it for the third time then according to this hadith her master must sell her even if only in exchange of a rope of hair. The main idea behind this hadith is that one must not humiliate someone even if they have committed an offence as it is against Islamic teachings and values. It also teaches us that we must not repeat our mistakes as there are consequences to our actions which can lead to severe punishments such as being sold off in exchange of something insignificant like a rope of hair.
