Sahih Muslim 1658b (Book 27, Hadith 49) #11413
Slavery and Mercy

SUMMARY: This hadith is about a person who got angry and slapped his slave-girl, to which Suwaid b. Muqarrin responded that the person should have found another part of her body to slap instead of her face. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) then commanded them to set the slave-girl free.

Hilal b. Yasaf reported that a person got angry and slapped his slave-girl. Thereupon Suwaid b. Muqarrin said to him: You could find no other part (to slap) but the prominent part of her face. See I was one of the seven sons of Muqarrin, and we had but only one slave-girl. The youngest of us slapped her, and Allah's Messenger commanded us to set her free. 2097

QUICK LESSONS:
Treat others with respect regardless their social status or position in society; strive for mercy even if we are faced with difficult situations; show forgiveness towards those who have wronged you; practice equality among all humans under Allah's eyes according to Islamic teachings .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of mercy even in difficult situations such as when someone gets angry or has been wronged by another person. In this case, a man got angry and slapped his slave-girl, but Suwaid b. Muqarrin reminded him that he could have chosen another part of her body to slap instead of her face, which is considered more prominent than other parts of the body in terms of respectability and dignity for humans in general. Furthermore, when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) heard about this incident he commanded them to set the slave-girl free as an act of mercy towards her despite what she had done wrong or how she was treated by her master before that moment. This teaches us that we should always strive for mercy even if we are faced with difficult situations or people who have wronged us in some way; it also shows us how important it is for us to treat others with respect regardless their social status or position in society since all humans deserve equal treatment under Allah's eyes according to Islamic teachings .
