Sahih Muslim 1643a (Book 26, Hadith 14) #11360
Kindness and Mercy towards the Elderly

SUMMARY: Allah's Apostle ﷺ showed kindness and mercy to an old man by relieving him of his vow.

Abu Huraira reported: Allah's Apostle found an old man walking between his two sons supported by them, whereupon Allah's Apostle said: What is the matter with him? He (the narrator) said: Allah's Messenger, they are his sons and there is upon him the (fulfilment) of the vow, whereupon Allah's Apostle said: Ride, old man, for Allah is not in need of you and your vow.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show kindness and mercy towards elders; Be mindful of promises/vows; Respect elders in society; Seek help when needed; Ask for forgiveness when necessary .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad showing kindness and mercy to an elderly man who was walking between his two sons, supported by them. The Prophet asked what was wrong with him, and he was told that the old man had made a vow which he needed to fulfill. The Prophet then said that Allah does not need this from him, so he should ride instead of walking. This teaches us that we should show kindness and mercy towards our elders, as they are valuable members of society who deserve respect and care. We should also be mindful of our promises or vows, but if it becomes too difficult for us to fulfill them then we can seek help from those around us or ask for forgiveness from Allah if necessary.
