Sahih Muslim 1642 (Book 26, Hadith 13) #11359
The Compassion of Allah's Apostle

SUMMARY: Allah's Apostle saw an old man being supported between his two sons and asked what was wrong. He was told that the old man had taken a vow to walk to the Ka'ba, but Allah's Apostle commanded him to ride instead.

Anas reported that Allah's Apostle saw an old man being supported between his two sons. He (the Holy Prophet) said: What is the matter with him? They said: He had taken the vow to walk (on foot to the Ka'ba). Thereupon he (Allah's apostle) said: Allah is indifferent to his inflicting upon himself chastisement, and he commanded him to ride.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show compassion towards others and avoid putting them through unnecessary hardship or difficulty if it can be avoided.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the compassion of Allah’s Apostle when he saw an elderly man being supported by his two sons. The old man had taken a vow to walk on foot all the way from where he was to the Ka’aba in Makkah, which is a very long journey. However, instead of allowing him to continue with this difficult task, Allah’s Apostle commanded him to ride instead and showed mercy towards him. This teaches us that we should be compassionate towards others and not put them through unnecessary hardship or difficulty if it can be avoided. We should also remember that even though we may take vows or promises for ourselves, if they become too difficult then it is better for us not to follow through with them as long as no harm comes from breaking them.
