The Loss of Reward for Keeping a Pet Dog

SUMMARY: Keeping a pet dog for any purpose other than hunting or watching the herd will result in a loss of reward.

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger as saying: He who kept a dog, but not meant for hunting or watching the herd, would lose one qirat of reward every day.
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ زِيَادٍ - عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، بْنِ سُمَيْعٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو رَزِينٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ كَلْبًا لَيْسَ بِكَلْبِ صَيْدٍ وَلاَ غَنَمٍ نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of keeping a pet dog. According to this hadith, if someone keeps a dog that is not meant for hunting or watching the herd then they will lose one qirat of reward every day. A qirat is an amount of reward that Allah gives to those who do good deeds and follow His commands. Therefore, this hadith teaches us that it is important to be mindful when we keep animals as pets and make sure they are kept for permissible reasons only. If not then we may be losing out on rewards from Allah without even knowing it!
