Options After Milking a She-Camel

SUMMARY: A person has the option to either keep or return a she-camel with a sa' of dates after milking it.

Hammam b. Munabbih said: Out of the ahadith which Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported to us from Allah's Messenger one is this that Allah's Messenger said: If one among you buys a she-camel having its udder tied up he has the two options for him after milking it either (to retain it) or return it with a sa' of dates.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the options that one has when they buy a she-camel with its udder tied up. After milking it, they have two choices; either to keep it or return it with a sa' of dates. A sa' is an ancient unit of measurement which is equivalent to four mudds, and one mudd is equal to approximately 2 kilograms in weight. Therefore, returning the camel would mean giving back four kilograms of dates as compensation for using the camel's milk. This hadith teaches us that we should be fair and just in our dealings and transactions, even if we are dealing with animals like camels. We should also be generous and kind towards animals by providing them food in exchange for their services rendered to us humans.
