The Power of Words

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of not speaking ill of others and to be mindful of one's words.

Ibn al-Qasim narrated on the authority of his father that 'Urwa b. Zubair (Allah be pleased with him) said to 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her): Didn't you see that such and such daughter of al-Hakam was divorced by her husband with an irrevocable divorce, and she left (the house of her husband)? Thereupon 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) said: It was bad that she did. He ( Urwa) said: Have you not heard the words of Fatima? Thereupon she said: There if no good for her in making mention of it.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the power and importance of our words. It is narrated by Ibn al-Qasim on the authority of his father that 'Urwa b. Zubair asked 'A'isha about a woman who was divorced by her husband with an irrevocable divorce and left her husband's house. When A'isha commented negatively on this woman, Urwa reminded her that she should not speak ill of others as Fatima had said before her. This teaches us that we should always be mindful when speaking about others and respect their decisions even if we do not agree with them. We must remember that our words have power and can cause harm or hurt feelings if used carelessly or without thoughtfulness for how they may affect another person's feelings or reputation.
