The Lawfulness of Breastfeeding

SUMMARY: Breastfeeding makes something unlawful that would have been unlawful if it was born.

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported Allah's Messenger as saying: "What becomes unlawful through breastfeeding is that which becomes unlawful through birth".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of relationships and stay within Islamic boundaries when it comes to marriage and family life.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the lawfulness of breastfeeding. It states that whatever becomes unlawful through birth, also becomes unlawful through breastfeeding. This means that if a baby is born from an illegal relationship, then the same applies to the baby if it was breastfed by its mother. In other words, any relationship which is not allowed in Islam will make the child from that relationship also not allowed in Islam even if they were breastfed by their mother. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our relationships and to stay within Islamic boundaries when it comes to marriage and family life so as not to cause any harm or suffering for our children in the future.
