Sahih Muslim 1435b (Book 16, Hadith 138) #10673
Refuting False Beliefs about Pregnancy and Childbirth

SUMMARY: Allah revealed a verse in the Quran to refute the false beliefs of Jews regarding pregnancy and childbirth.

Jabir (b. Abdullah) (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Jews used to say that when one comes to one's wife through the vagina, but being on her back, and she becomes pregnant, the child has a squint. So the verse came down: " Your wives are your ti'Ith; go then unto your tilth, as you may desire".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Allah refuting a false belief that was held by some Jews. The belief was that if a man has intercourse with his wife while she is lying on her back, then any child born from this union will have a squint. In response to this, Allah revealed the verse “Your wives are your tilth; go then unto your tilth, as you may desire” in order to refute this false belief and explain that it does not matter how one has intercourse with their wife; it will not affect the child’s physical appearance or health. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful when believing something just because someone says it without verifying its truthfulness first. We should always seek knowledge from reliable sources before accepting something as true.
