Sahih al-Bukhari 1070 (Book 17, Hadith 4) #1031
Prostration During Recitation of Surat an-Najm

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) recited Surat-an-Najm and prostrated while reciting it, and all the people followed suit. However, one man took a handful of stones or earth and raised it to his face instead of prostrating, saying that this was sufficient for him. Later on, he was killed as a non-believer.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud: The Prophet recited Surat-an-Najm (53) and prostrated while reciting it and all the people prostrated and a man amongst the people took a handful of stones or earth and raised it to his face and said, "This is sufficient for me. Later on I saw him killed as a non-believer".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of prostration during the recitation of Surat an-Najm. It is narrated by Abdullah bin Mas'ud that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited this surah from the Quran, he prostrated himself in reverence to Allah SWT. All those present followed suit in prostration except for one man who instead took a handful of stones or earth and raised it to his face saying that this was sufficient for him. Unfortunately, later on he was killed as a nonbeliever due to his refusal to bow down in prostration like everyone else did at that time. This hadith teaches us about how important it is to show respect towards Allah SWT by following His commands such as bowing down in prostration during prayer or when reading from His holy book - The Quran - which contains many verses about His greatness and power over all things in existence.
