Sahih al-Bukhari 1031 (Book 15, Hadith 26) #995
Raising Hands in Invocation

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to raise his hands for invocations, especially for Istisqa', and he would raise them so much that the whiteness of his armpits became visible.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet never raised his hands for any invocation except for that of Istisqa' and he used to raise them so much that the whiteness of his armpits became visible. (Note: It may be that Anas did not see the Prophet raising his hands, but it is narrated that the Prophet used to raise his hands for invocations other than Istisqa. See Hadith #807 & 808 and also see Hadith #612, Vol. 5).

QUICK LESSONS:
Raise your hands while making a supplication/invocation to show respect towards Allah SWT .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Anas bin Malik speaks about the importance of raising one's hands when making a supplication or invocation. This is especially true when making an invocation for rain, known as Istisqa'. It is reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would lift his hands so high that the whiteness of his armpits could be seen. This shows how important it was to him to make this supplication with sincerity and humility. It also serves as an example for us on how we should approach our own invocations and supplications - with utmost sincerity and humility, lifting our hands up towards Allah in prayer.
