Sahih Muslim 1180b (Book 15, Hadith 9) #9944
Doing the Same Rituals for Hajj and Umra

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a person who was in a state of Ihram for Umra and was wearing a cloak with perfume on it. The Prophet (ﷺ) told him to do what he would do in Hajj for his Umra as well.

Safwan b. Ya'la reported on the authority of his father (who said): A person came to the Messenger of Allah as he was staying at Ji'rana and I (the narrator's father) was at that time in the apostle's company and (the person) was donning a cloak having the marks of perfume on it, and he said: I am in a state of Ihram for the sake of Umra, and it (this cloak) is upon me and I am perfumed. The Apostle of Allah said to him: What would you do in your Hajj? He said: I would take off the clothes and would wash from me this perfume. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah said: What you do in your Hajj do it in your Umra.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow religious rituals properly without any negligence or shortcuts taken when performing them; follow instructions given by prophet Muhammad ﷺ .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of performing rituals during both Hajj and Umra. It is narrated by Safwan b. Ya'la from his father that someone came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ while he was staying at Ji'rana wearing a cloak with perfume marks on it and said that he was in a state of Ihram for an Umra pilgrimage. The Prophet ﷺ asked him what he would do during his Hajj pilgrimage if this were the case then, to which he replied that he would take off his clothes and wash away all traces of perfume from himself. To this, the Prophet ﷺ replied that whatever one does during their Hajj should also be done during their Umra as well; thus emphasizing how important it is to perform rituals properly regardless of whether one is performing an umrah or hajj pilgrimage. This hadith teaches us how important it is to follow religious rituals properly without any negligence or shortcuts taken when performing them; even if they are performed outside of hajj season such as when doing an umrah pilgrimage instead.
