Sahih Muslim 1177a (Book 15, Hadith 1) #9936
Clothing for Muhrims

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave advice on what a Muhrim should wear while in the state of Ihram.

Ibn 'Umar (Allah be pleased with them) reported that a person asked the Messenger of Allah what a Muhrim should put on as dress. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah said: Do not put on a shirt or a turban, or trousers or a cap, or leather stockings except one who does not find shoes; he may put on stockings but he should trim them below the ankles. And do not wear clothes to which saffron or wars is applied.

QUICK LESSONS:
Wear modest clothing when in a state of Ihram; Trim stockings below ankles if needed; Show respect for religious occasions/ceremonies by dressing appropriately

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was asked about what a person in the state of Ihram should wear. He replied that they should not wear shirts, turbans, trousers, caps or leather stockings unless they cannot find shoes. If this is the case then they can put on stockings but must trim them below the ankles. Furthermore, clothes with saffron or wars applied to them are not allowed either. This hadith teaches us that when we are in a state of Ihram we must dress modestly and refrain from wearing certain types of clothing as it is disrespectful to do so. It also teaches us to be mindful and respectful when dressing for religious occasions and ceremonies as it is important to show respect for our faith and its traditions.
