Sahih Muslim 1159o (Book 13, Hadith 249) #9888
Moderation in Fasting and Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of moderation in fasting and prayer, and how one should not overburden themselves.

'Abdullah b. 'Amr (Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Messenger of Allah said to me! 'Abdullah b. 'Amr, it has been conveyed to me that you observe fast during the day and stand in prayer during the whole night. Don't do that, for your body has a share of its own in you, your eye has a share of its own in you, your wife has a share of her own in you. Observe fast and break it too. Fast for three days in every month and that is a perpetual fasting. I said! Messenger of Allah, I have got strength enough (to do more than this), whereupon he said: Then observe the fast of David (peace be upon him). Observe fast one day and break it (on the other) day. And he ('Abdullah b. 'Amr) used to say: Would that I had availed myself of this concession.

QUICK LESSONS:
Practice moderation when it comes to religious practices such as fasting and praying; strive for balance between spiritual life & physical life; take care of your body's needs & those around you; observe fasts regularly but don't overburden yourself with too much fasting or praying at night without rest or sleep .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of moderation when it comes to fasting and prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised Abdullah b. 'Amr to observe fast for three days every month, as this would be a perpetual fasting that would not overburden him. He also suggested observing the fast of David, which was one day of fasting followed by one day of breaking the fast. The Prophet Muhammad also reminded Abdullah b. 'Amr that his body has its own needs, as well as his eyes and wife, so he should not overburden himself with too much fasting or praying at night without rest or sleep. This hadith teaches us that we should practice moderation in our religious practices so that we do not become overwhelmed or exhausted from them; instead we should strive for balance between our spiritual life and physical life so that both are taken care of properly.
