Sahih Muslim 1156b (Book 13, Hadith 224) #9863
Fasting During Ramadan

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) only fasted during the month of Ramadan and did not fast in any other month until his death.

'Abdullah b. Shaqiq reported: I said to 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her): Did the Messenger of Allah observe fast during a month? She said, I do not know of any month in which he fasted throughout except Ramadan and (the month) in which he did not fast at all till he ran the course of his life. May peace be upon him.

Fast during the holy month of Ramadan

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, which is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is narrated by Abdullah b. Shaqiq who asked 'A'isha, a wife of Prophet Muhammad, about whether he observed fasting during any other months besides Ramadan. She replied that she was unaware that he ever did so until his death, indicating that fasting in this particular month was especially important to him and should be taken seriously by Muslims as well.
