Sahih Muslim 1151a (Book 13, Hadith 209) #9848
The Etiquette of Fasting

SUMMARY: When fasting, one should not use obscene language or do any act of ignorance and if someone slanders them, they should say "I am fasting".

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported: When any one of you gets up in the morning in the state of fasting, he should neither use obscene language nor do any act of ignorance. And if anyone slanders him or quarrels with him, he should say:" I am fasting, I am fasting".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the etiquette of fasting. It teaches us that when we are fasting, we should not use obscene language or do anything wrong. If someone insults us or argues with us, we should simply reply by saying “I am fasting”. This shows that even in difficult situations, we can remain patient and polite. We can also take this as a reminder to be mindful of our words and actions at all times - not just when we are fasting - so that our behaviour reflects the teachings of Islam.
