Fasting on 'Ashura Day

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) commanded his followers to fast on the day of 'Ashura, but he passed away before the next year came.

Ibn 'Abbas reported that when the Messenger of Allah fasted on the day of 'Ashura and commanded that it should he observed as a fast, they (his Companions) said to him: Messenger of Allah, it is a day which the Jews and Christians hold in high esteem. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah said: When the next year comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the 9th But the Messenger of Allah died before the advent of the next year.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas tells us that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) commanded his followers to fast on the day of ‘Ashura. This is a special day for both Jews and Christians, and it is believed that fasting on this day brings blessings from Allah. However, due to his passing away before the next year came, we were not able to observe this commandment as he wished us to do so. This hadith teaches us about obedience towards Allah’s commands and also reminds us of our beloved prophet’s teachings which should be followed even after his death. It also encourages us to practice self-discipline in our lives by fasting regularly as it brings many spiritual benefits for believers.
