Fasting on the Day of Ashura

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged people to fast on the day of Ashura, but also allowed them to choose whether or not they wanted to fast.

'Abdullah b. Umar (Allah be pleased with them) reported that the day of 'Ashura was mentioned before the Messenger of Allah and he said: It is a day when the people in the pre-Islamic days need to observe fast, so he who wishes to observe fast should do so, and he who wishes to abandon it should do so.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith is about fasting on the day of Ashura, which is a day that was observed by people in pre-Islamic times. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged people to observe this fast if they wished, but also allowed them to choose whether or not they wanted to do so. This hadith teaches us that we have a choice in our religious obligations and that we should use our own judgement when deciding how best to practice our faith. It also shows us the importance of respecting traditions from before Islam and how we can incorporate them into our lives as Muslims today.
