Sahih al-Bukhari 1015 (Book 15, Hadith 10) #979
Praying for Rain and Asking Allah to Make It Rain Around Medina

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) praying for rain and asking Allah to make it rain around Medina but not on it.

Narrated Qatada: Anas I said, "While Allah's Messenger (pbuh) was delivering the Friday Khutba (sermon) a man came and said, 'O Allah's Messenger ! Rain is scarce; please ask Allah to bless us with rain'. So he invoked Allah for it, and it rained so much that we could hardly reach our homes and it continued raining till the next Friday". Anas further said, "Then the same or some other person stood up and said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Invoke Allah to withhold the rain'. On that, Allah's Messenger I said, 'O Allah! Round about us and not on us'. " Anas added, "I saw the clouds dispersing right and left and it continued to rain but not over Medina".

QUICK LESSONS:
Turn towards Allah in times of need or difficulty no matter how big or small your problem may be .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about the power of prayer and supplication. During a Friday sermon, a man asked the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to pray for rain as there was a drought in Medina. The Prophet Muhammad then prayed to Allah that He should bless them with rain. His prayer was answered and it rained so much that people could hardly reach their homes. Then another man asked him to pray for the rains to stop as too much of it would cause flooding in Medina. Again, his prayer was answered and the clouds dispersed right and left without raining over Medina itself. This hadith teaches us that we should always turn towards Allah in times of need or difficulty, no matter how big or small our problem may be because He is All-Powerful and can answer our prayers if He wills it so. We must also remember that whatever happens is ultimately part of His plan which we may not understand at first glance but will eventually come into fruition when we look back at our lives later on down the line.
