Sahih Muslim 1115a (Book 13, Hadith 118) #9757
Fasting on Journey is Not Righteousness

SUMMARY: Fasting while travelling is not a sign of righteousness.

Jabir b. 'Abdullah (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that in the course of a journey Allah's Messenger saw a man, people crowding around him and providing him a shade. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: What is the matter with him? They said: He is a person observing fast. Whereupon the Messenger of Allah said: It is no righteousness that you fast on journey.

QUICK LESSONS:
Take care of your health even when you are travelling; be mindful when performing religious acts during travel etc .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that fasting while travelling is not a sign of righteousness. The Prophet Muhammad saw a man who was fasting and asked what he was doing, to which the people replied that he was observing fast. The Prophet then said that it is no righteousness to fast on journey as it can be difficult for the traveller and can cause harm to their health. This hadith teaches us that we should take care of our health and wellbeing even when we are travelling, and should not put ourselves in any danger or difficulty just for the sake of religious practices like fasting. We should also remember that true righteousness comes from within, from our hearts and minds, rather than from external practices like fasting or praying.
