Sahih Muslim 1113e (Book 13, Hadith 114) #9753
Fasting During Ramadan - Choice is Yours

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) journeyed during the month of Ramadan while fasting, but broke his fast when he reached Usfan and did not resume it until he reached Mecca. He allowed people to follow their own choice in fasting or breaking the fast.

Ibn 'Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah journeyed during the month of Ramadan in a state of fasting till he reached Usfan. He then ordered a cup containing drinking water and he drank that openly so that the people might see it, and broke the fast (and did not resume it) till he reached Mecca. Ibn 'Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah's Messenger fasted and broke the fast, so he who wished fasted and he who wished to break it broke it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect other people's choices; Follow rules & regulations set out by Allah; Consider personal circumstances & beliefs before making decisions about religious practices such as fasting during Ramadan etc.; Follow example set by Prophet Muhammad PBUH .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn 'Abbas tells us that Prophet Muhammad journeyed during the month of Ramadan while fasting. When he reached Usfan, he drank openly from a cup of water and broke his fast without resuming it until he arrived at Mecca. This shows us that although fasting is an important part of Islam during the holy month of Ramadan, one has a choice to either fast or break their fast depending on their circumstances. This hadith also teaches us that we should respect other people's choices even if they differ from our own beliefs and opinions.

The Prophet Muhammad was an example for all Muslims to follow in terms of how we should conduct ourselves in our daily lives as well as how we should treat others with respect regardless of any differences between us. We can learn from this hadith that even though there are certain rules and regulations set out by Allah for Muslims to abide by during Ramadan such as fasting throughout the day, ultimately it is up to each individual person whether they choose to do so or not based on their personal circumstances and beliefs.
