The Power of Prayer for Rain

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the power of prayer and how it can be used to ask Allah for rain.

Narrated Anas: Whenever drought threatened them, 'Umar bin Al-Khattab, used to ask Al-Abbas bin 'Abdul Muttalib to invoke Allah for rain. He used to say, "O Allah! We used to ask our Prophet to invoke You for rain, and You would bless us with rain, and now we ask his uncle to invoke You for rain. O Allah ! Bless us with rain".(1) And so it would rain.

QUICK LESSONS:
Turn towards God in prayer when you are in need of something from Him .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the power of prayer and how it can be used to ask Allah for rain. It was narrated by Anas that whenever there was a drought, Umar bin Al-Khattab would ask Al-Abbas bin 'Abdul Muttalib to invoke Allah for rain. He would say, "O Allah! We used to ask our Prophet to invoke You for rain, and You would bless us with rain, and now we ask his uncle to invoke You for rain. O Allah ! Bless us with rain". And so it would always come down in abundance. This hadith teaches us that when we are in need of something from God, we should turn towards Him in prayer as He is the only one who can provide us with what we need. It also shows us the importance of having faith in God's ability to answer our prayers even if they are made by someone other than a prophet or messenger.
