Sahih Muslim 1101a (Book 13, Hadith 65) #9704
Breaking the Fast at Sunset

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that when the sun sets and night appears, one should break their fast.

'Abdullah b. Abi Aufa reported: We were with the Messenger of Allah on a journey during the month of Ramadan. When the sun had sunk he said: So and so, get down (from your ride) and prepare the meal of parched barley for us. He said: Messenger of Allah, still (there is light of) day. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Get down and prepare meal of parched barley for us. So he got down and prepared the meal of parched barley and offered him, and the apostle of Allah drank that (liquid meal). He then told with the gesture of his hand that when the sun sank from that side and the night appeared from that side, then the observer of the fast should break it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow what Prophet Muhammad has taught us by breaking our fast at sunset each day

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fasting during the month of Ramadan, which is a holy month in Islam. During this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset and abstain from food and drink. In this hadith, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was on a journey with his companions during Ramadan when he asked one of them to prepare a meal of parched barley for them even though there was still light outside. He then gestured with his hand that when the sun sets and night appears, it is time to break the fast. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of our actions during Ramadan and follow what Prophet Muhammad has taught us by breaking our fast at sunset each day. It also teaches us patience as we wait for sunset before breaking our fast each day in order to gain rewards from Allah SWT for observing this holy month properly.
