Sahih Muslim 1099b (Book 13, Hadith 63) #9702
Observing Sunset Prayer and Breaking Fast

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's companion Abdullah and how he used to observe sunset prayer and break the fast.

Abu 'Atiyya reported: I and Masruq went to 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) and Masruq said to her: There are two persons among the Companions of Muhammad none of whom abandons the good, but one of them hastens to observe sunset prayer and break the fast, and the other delays in observing the sunset prayer and in breaking the fast, whereupon she said: Who hastens to observe sunset prayer and break the fast? He said: It is 'Abdullah. Upon this she said: This is how the Messenger of Allah used to do.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of observing sunset prayer and breaking fast. It was narrated by Abu 'Atiyya who reported that he went with Masruq to visit A'isha, one of the wives of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Masruq asked her about two people among the companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who never abandoned good deeds but one hastened to observe sunset prayer and break his fast while another delayed in doing so. A'isha then said that this was how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do it himself. This hadith teaches us that we should follow in the footsteps of our beloved prophet by observing sunset prayer on time as well as breaking our fast at its appointed time. We should also strive to be consistent in doing good deeds throughout our lives just like Abdullah did during his lifetime.
