Sahih Muslim 1094c (Book 13, Hadith 52) #9691
The True Dawn of Fasting

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of not eating before the true dawn has come, and to wait until it spreads across the horizon.

Samura b. Jundub (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger as saying: The Adhan of Bilal may not mislead you with regard to your food at the commencement of the fast, nor the vertical (streaks) of whiteness in the horizon (for it is an indication of false dawn). You should stop eating (food) till (the whiteness) spreads like it. Hammad narrated it and with the gesture of his band he explained, the horizontal position (of the streaks of light).

QUICK LESSONS:
Wait until true dawn has come before starting your fast; Follow Allah's commands even when it may be difficult or inconvenient for you; Listen to a call to prayer from Bilal if possible; Be patient and disciplined while fasting during Ramadan.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fasting during Ramadan, which is one of the five pillars of Islam. It teaches us that we should not eat before the true dawn has come, as indicated by a call to prayer from Bilal or by streaks of whiteness in the horizon. We should wait until these streaks spread across the horizon before we start our fast for that day. This hadith also teaches us patience and discipline in following Allah's commands even when it may be difficult or inconvenient for us to do so.
