Sahih Muslim 1085a (Book 13, Hadith 29) #9668
Keeping Promises and Honoring Oaths

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) took an oath to not visit his wives for a month, but when the month was only 29 days long, he went to them.

Umm Salama (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah took an oath that he would not go to some of his wives for the whole of the month. When twenty-nine days bad passed he (the Holy Prophet) went to them in the morning or in the evening. Upon this it was said to him: Apostle of Allah, you took an oath that you would not come to us for a month, whereupon he said: The month may also consist of twenty-nine days.

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep your promises and honor your word no matter what they are or how long they last for .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of keeping promises and honoring oaths. The Prophet Muhammad took an oath that he would not go to some of his wives for a whole month. However, when twenty-nine days had passed, he went to them in the morning or evening. When it was pointed out that he had taken an oath not to come for a full month, he replied that a month can also consist of twenty-nine days. This teaches us that we should always keep our promises and honor our oaths no matter what they are or how long they last for. We should also remember that even if something is shorter than expected, it still counts as fulfilling our promise or honoring our oath.
