Minimum Amount of Zakat Due

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the minimum amount of Zakat that is due on certain items.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported Allah's Messenger as saying: No Sadaqa (zakat) is due on less than five wasqs of (dates or grains), on less than five camel-heads, and on less than five Uqiyahs (of silver).
وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو كَامِلٍ، فُضَيْلُ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرٌ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُفَضَّلٍ - حَدَّثَنَا عُمَارَةُ بْنُ غَزِيَّةَ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُمَارَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ، يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ لَيْسَ فِيمَا دُونَ خَمْسَةِ أَوْسُقٍ صَدَقَةٌ وَلَيْسَ فِيمَا دُونَ خَمْسِ ذَوْدٍ صَدَقَةٌ وَلَيْسَ فِيمَا دُونَ خَمْسِ أَوَاقٍ صَدَقَةٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the minimum amount of zakat that is due on certain items. According to this hadith, no zakat is due on less than five wasqs of dates or grains, less than five camel heads and less than five uqiyahs of silver. A wasq is a measurement unit which equals 60 sa’s or approximately 558 kilograms. Uqiyah refers to a silver coin which was used as currency during the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ taught us that charity should be given even if it’s small amounts and this hadith serves as an example for us to follow in our own lives today.
