Sahih Muslim 1045a (Book 12, Hadith 142) #9541
Greed and Contentment

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised Umar (RA) to take what comes to him without being greedy, but not to long for it.

Salim b. Abdullah b. 'Umar reported on the authority of his father ('Abdullah b. 'Umar) that he had heard 'Umar b. Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) saying: The Messenger of Allah gave me a gift, but I said: Give it to one who needs it more than I. He gave me wealth for the second time but I said: Give it to one who needs it more than I. Upon this the Messenger of Allah said: Take out of this wealth which comes to you without your being avaricious and without begging, but in other circumstance's do not let your heart hanker after it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Take out of this wealth which comes to you without being avaricious or begging

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of avoiding greed and being content with what one has in life. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) gave Umar ibn Khattab a gift, but he refused it because he felt someone else needed it more than him. When the Prophet offered him wealth for a second time, Umar again refused because he felt someone else needed it more than him. The Prophet then advised Umar to take out of this wealth which comes to him without being avaricious or begging, but not to let his heart hanker after it too much. This hadith teaches us that we should be content with what we have and not be greedy or envious of others' possessions; instead, we should use our resources wisely and help those who are less fortunate than us when possible.
