Attending Religious Gatherings During Menstruation

SUMMARY: Women who are menstruating should attend religious gatherings but keep away from the Musalla.

Narrated Um-'Atiya: We were ordered to go out (for 'Id) and also to take along with us the menstruating women, mature girls and virgins staying in seclusion. (Ibn 'Aun said, "Or mature virgins staying in seclusion)". The menstruating women could present themselves at the religious gathering and invocation of Muslims but should keep away from their Musalla.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about women attending religious gatherings during their menstrual cycle. It is narrated by Um-'Atiya that they were ordered to take along with them the menstruating women, mature girls and virgins staying in seclusion to the 'Id prayer. The menstruating women could present themselves at the religious gathering and invocation of Muslims but should keep away from their Musalla or prayer place. This hadith teaches us that even though a woman may not be able to pray due to her menstrual cycle she can still attend religious gatherings and benefit from them spiritually. It also teaches us that it is important for all Muslims regardless of gender or physical condition to participate in communal activities such as prayers and festivals as much as possible.
