Prescribing Half a Sa’ for Sadaqat-ul-Fitr

SUMMARY: The hadith is about Mu'awiya prescribing half a sa' of wheat equal to one sa' of dates, and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri objecting to it and saying that he used to bring forth during the lifetime of the Prophet (PBUH) one sa' of dates, or one sa' of raisins, or one sa' of barley, or one sa’of cheese as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported that when Mu'awiya prescribed half a sa' of wheat equal to one sa' of dates, he (Abu Sa'id al-Khudri) objected to it, and said: I would take out (Sadaqat-ul-Fitr) but that which I used to bring forth during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah one sa' of dates, or one sa' of raisins, or one sa' of barley, or one sa' of cheese.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance and value placed on charity in Islam. It was narrated by Abu Sa’id al Khudri who reported that when Mu‘awiya prescribed half a ‘saʼof wheat equal to one ‘saʼof dates as charity for Eid ul Fitr, he objected to it and said that during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ he used to give out either 1 ‘saʼof dates, 1 ‘saʼof raisins, 1 ‘saʼof barley or 1 ‘saʼof cheese as charity for Eid ul Fitr. This hadith teaches us that giving charity is an important part of our faith and we should strive to give whatever we can in order to help those less fortunate than us. We should also remember that even small acts can make a big difference in someone's life so we should not underestimate our own contributions towards helping others.
