Sahih Muslim 985c (Book 12, Hadith 23) #9422
The Zakat of Fitr

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Zakat of Fitr, which was taken out in three kinds - one sa' of dates, one sa' of cheese, or one sa' of barley. This continued until Mu'awiya saw that two Mudds of wheat were equal to one sa' of dates and Abu Sa'id continued to take it out as before.

Sa'd b. Abu Sarh heard Abu Sa'id al-Khudri as saying: We, on behalf of young or old, free or slave, used to take out the Zakat of Fitr while the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) was among us, in three kinds, one sa' of dates, one sa' of cheese, or one sa' of barley, and we continued to take that out till the time of Mu'awiya, for he saw that two Mudds of wheat were equal to one sa' of dates. Abu Sa'id sald: I would continue to take that out as before (i e. one sa' of wheat).

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity during Ramadan and throughout the year too! Strive for fairness when giving charity and not be wasteful with our resources.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the obligation for Muslims to pay a charity tax called the Zakat al-Fitr during Ramadan. It was traditionally paid in three forms - a measure called a ‘sa’ which could be either dates, cheese or barley. However, when Mu’awiya came into power he noticed that two mudds were equal to one ‘sa’ and so people began paying with wheat instead. This practice has been followed ever since then and it serves as an important reminder for us all to give charity during Ramadan and throughout the year too! It also teaches us that we should always strive for fairness when giving charity and not be wasteful with our resources.
