Prescribing Zakat-ul-Fitr for Muslims

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad prescribed the payment of Zakat-ul-Fitr on breaking the fast of Ramadan for every Muslim, male and female, free or slave.

Ibn Umar said that Allah's Messenger (way peace be upon him) prescribed the payment of Zakat-ul-Fitr (on breaking the fast) of Ramadan for people, for every freeman, or slave, male and female among the Muslims-one sa' of dried dates, or one sa' of barley.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ بْنِ قَعْنَبٍ، وَقُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، - وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ - قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَرَضَ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ عَلَى النَّاسِ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى كُلِّ حُرٍّ أَوْ عَبْدٍ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn Umar states that Prophet Muhammad prescribed the payment of Zakat-ul-Fitr on breaking the fast of Ramadan for every Muslim, male and female, free or slave. This is a form of charity which is obligatory upon all Muslims who are able to pay it. It is usually paid in kind such as dried dates or barley which are staple foods in many parts of the world. This hadith teaches us about giving charity to those who need it and helping those less fortunate than ourselves. It also encourages us to be generous with our wealth and resources so that we can help others in need. Furthermore, this hadith reminds us that Allah rewards those who give charity generously and sincerely from their hearts without expecting anything in return.
