Sahih Muslim 971a (Book 11, Hadith 124) #9394
Sitting on Burning Coals vs Sitting on a Grave

SUMMARY: It is better to sit on burning coals than to sit on a grave.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying: It is better that one of you should sit on live coals which would burn his clothing and come in contact with his skin than that he should sit on a grave.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect Graves & Those Buried In Them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of respecting graves and not sitting or standing upon them. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that it would be better for someone to sit on burning coals which would burn their clothing and come in contact with their skin than it would be for them to sit or stand upon a grave. This hadith teaches us the importance of respecting graves and those who are buried in them, as well as the importance of avoiding any kind of disrespect towards them. We should remember that those who are buried in graves have passed away and we should treat their resting place with respect out of love for Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him).
