Sahih Muslim 927a (Book 11, Hadith 20) #9290
Weeping Over the Dead and its Consequences

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that the deceased is punished because of their family's weeping over them.

'Abdullah b. 'Umar reported that Hafsa wept for 'Umar (when he was about to die). He ('Umar) said: Be quiet, my daughter. Don't you know that the Messenger of Allah had said:" The deceased is punished because of his family's weeping over the death"?

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when expressing grief over a deceased person; Respect life & death; Moderate your grieving process

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Abdullah b. 'Umar and reported by Hafsa speaks to a very important lesson about death and grieving. According to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) when someone passes away, it is not beneficial for their family to weep excessively over them as this will result in punishment for the deceased in the afterlife. This does not mean that one should not grieve or express sorrow at all; rather it means that one should be mindful of how much they are grieving so as to avoid any potential punishment for their loved ones in the hereafter. It also serves as a reminder of how fleeting life can be and how important it is to make sure we are living our lives according to Allah's commands so we can be rewarded in Jannah after death instead of being punished.
