Sahih Muslim 790a (Book 6, Hadith 269) #8994
The Importance of Memorizing the Quran

SUMMARY: This hadith emphasizes the importance of memorizing the Quran and encourages people to try their best to remember it.

'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger as saying: What a wretched person is he amongst them who says: I have forgotten such and such a verse. (He should instead of using this expression say): I have been made to forget it. Try to remember the Qur'an for it is more apt to escape from men's minds than a hobbled camel.

QUICK LESSONS:
Try your best in order to remember Allah's words

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of memorizing and reciting the Quran. It is narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, who was one of Prophet Muhammad’s closest companions. He reported that Prophet Muhammad said that a person who says “I have forgotten such and such a verse” should instead say “I have been made to forget it” as forgetting is beyond our control. He then encouraged people to try their best to remember it as it is more likely for us to forget something than for a hobbled camel, which cannot run away, to escape from us. This hadith teaches us that we should strive hard in order to remember Allah's words and not take them lightly or forget them easily.
