Sahih Muslim 781b (Book 6, Hadith 254) #8979
Praying in the Mosque of Mats

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prayed in the mosque of mats for many nights, and people began to gather around him. He then said that if this prayer was obligatory, it would be difficult to observe.

Zaid b. Thabit reported that the Messenger of Allah made an apartment in the mosque of mats, and he observed in it prayers for many nights till people began to gather around him, and the rest of the hadith is the same but with this addition: " Had this (Nafl) prayer become obligatory for you, you would not be able to observe it".

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad PBUH prayed in the mosque of mats for many nights and people began to gather around him. This hadith is teaching us about the importance of prayer and how it should be observed even when it is not obligatory. It also teaches us that if we make an effort to pray regularly, others will follow our example and join us in prayer as well. The Prophet PBUH also taught us that if this prayer was made obligatory, it would be difficult for people to observe due to their other commitments or obligations they have during their day-to-day lives. This hadith is a reminder for all Muslims that we should strive to make time for our prayers no matter how busy our lives may get so that we can reap its rewards both here on earth and in the hereafter.
