Sahih Muslim 775 (Book 6, Hadith 246) #8971
The Importance of Tahajjud Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of observing Tahajjud prayer and how Allah has control over our souls.

Husain b. 'Ali narrated on the authority of (his father) 'Ali b. Abu Talib that the Messenger of Allah came one night to see him ('Ali) and Fatimah (the daughter of the Holy Prophet) and said: Don't you observe (Tahajjud) prayer? I ('Ali) said: Messenger of Allah, verily our souls are in the hands of Allah and when He wants to awaken us, He awakens us. The Messenger of Allah went back when I said this to him. He was striking his hand on his thigh while returning, and I heard him say: Verily the man disputes with many things.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of observing Tahajjud prayer which is a special type of prayer that Muslims perform late at night or in the early morning hours before dawn. It is said that this type of prayer brings one closer to Allah and can be seen as an act of worship for those who are devoted to their faith. In this hadith, we learn that even though we may have control over our own lives and actions, ultimately it is Allah who has control over our souls and when He wants us to wake up for prayers He will awaken us. This teaches us that we should always strive to do what is right in order to please Allah and not rely solely on ourselves or our own strength but rather trust in Him for guidance and support throughout life’s journey.
